Business Context:

Barco has long been a pioneer in visualization technology, delivering hardware and software solutions that empower businesses to craft unforgettable immersive experiences. The integration of powerful software tools like the Barco Pulse platform complements its cutting-edge projectors, enabling seamless management and control for diverse applications in entertainment, education, retail, and more.

The combination of Barco immersive experience projectors and the Pulse toolset redefines the possibilities of visual storytelling and engagement. Together, they empower businesses to deliver flawless, immersive environments while ensuring operational simplicity and cost-effectiveness.

Considering a major dependency on software applications to manage and control projectors offsite and onsite, multiple applications are used for different use cases.

Project Overview

This project is a WORK IN PROGRESS launched recently in the market, and projectionists and technicians are currently using it to manage their events and shows.

This initiative aimed to streamline, integrate, and establish UX consistency across IX applications. By identifying key use cases and mapping them to respective user personas, the project seeks to create a cohesive and intuitive experience that enhances adoption and usability.

The focus is on breaking silos, improving product alignment, and ensuring that users can effortlessly derive value from the software ecosystem.

High-Level Problem Statements

  1. Fragmented User Experience:
The current user experience across different applications feels disjointed, resembling isolated islands.

  2. Low Adoption Rate:
The existing applications struggle with low user adoption due to usability and accessibility challenges.

  3. Siloed Development Approach:
A siloed approach to developing IX products has resulted in inconsistencies in design and functionality.

  4. Limited Value Delivery:
Users face challenges in extracting and delivering value from software products.

  5. Complex Navigation:
It can be overwhelming for users to identify and locate the right application to meet their specific use cases.

Process

The overall project was divided into short-term and long-term visions.

Short-term objectives are required to immediately address the UX inconsistencies in terms of workflows across all the applications and visual and design system alignment.

Short Term

1. Usability Testing
2. Heuristic Evaulation
3. Beta User Feedback Survey

Long Term

Phase 1: Discovery and Stakeholder Alignment

  1. Develop a Comprehensive Stakeholder Map:

    • Identify key stakeholders (internal teams, end users, partners, distributors).

    • Highlight critical touchpoints with an emphasis on distributor interactions to understand their influence on operations and relationships.

  2. Understand User and Business Needs:

    • Conduct user research to identify behaviours, pain points, and needs.

    • Gather insights through market research to align business goals with user preferences and market demands.

  3. Validate the Business Strategy:

    • Design a structured plan for exploring and validating the business strategy.

    • Use data-driven methodologies to align market opportunities with business objectives.

Phase 2: Vision and Business Model Transformation

  1. Create a Long-Term Vision:

    • Formulate a strategy that extends beyond current markets, identifying new revenue streams and market opportunities.

    • Explore potential areas for growth and transformation.

  2. Transition to a Scalable and Agile Model:

    • Shift from a product-centric to a service-focused, agile business model.

    • Introduce flexibility to adapt to changing market demands and improve service delivery.

  3. Plan for Recurring Revenue:

    • Develop strategies for implementing a recurring revenue model (e.g., subscription or pay-per-use).

    • Prepare software systems to support scalability and efficiency in this new approach.

Phase 3: User-Centric Integration and Value Delivery

  1. Integrate UX into Business Strategy:

    • Ensure user experience (UX) is a cornerstone of business decision-making.

    • Define value for various user segments and tailor solutions to meet these needs effectively.

  2. Deliver Value Across the User Spectrum:

    • Start small with minimal viable products or features, iterate based on feedback, and scale smartly.

    • Align pricing strategies with user expectations, ensuring affordability and perceived value.

Phase 4: Implementation and Optimization

  1. Centralize and streamline business processes:

    • Develop centralized operations to enhance efficiency and agility.

    • Ensure seamless integration of new models into existing workflows.

  2. Assess and refine the impact of new models:

    • Evaluate how transitioning to a recurring revenue model transforms traditional operations.

    • Identify new business needs and adjust services or infrastructure accordingly.

  3. Proactively identify challenges and opportunities:

    • Use strategic insights to anticipate potential obstacles and discover growth opportunities.

    • Implement feedback loops to refine offerings and improve overall user satisfaction.

Outcome

The initiative to streamline and integrate Barco's immersive experience (IX) applications has resulted in significant early achievements, addressing key challenges and setting the stage for long-term success. Here's a summary of the outcomes thus far:

  1. Unified and Cohesive User Experience
The redesigned IX ecosystem offers a more consistent and cohesive user experience. Major features like adding a projector, grouping, device registration, and venue view are harmonized with a unified design language, reducing the feeling of fragmentation and providing a holistic experience for users across diverse use cases.

  2. Intuitive Design Based on User Feedback
Early feedback from projectionists and technicians highlights the improved intuitiveness of the redesigned UX. Simplified workflows and clear navigation have made it easier for users to interact with the applications, enhancing usability and accessibility.

  3. Improved Navigation and Accessibility
Streamlined navigation ensures users can effortlessly locate the right tools to meet their needs. This has reduced complexity and allowed users to manage events and shows more efficiently.

  4. Enhanced Value Delivery
The new ecosystem empowers users to extract meaningful insights and deliver value effectively. Integrated features simplify event and show management, aligning with Barco’s vision for operational simplicity and cost-effectiveness.

  5. Aligned Development Practices
The removal of silos in development has resulted in consistent design and functionality across the product suite. Collaborative development practices ensure better alignment with user needs and business goals.

While these initial outcomes are promising, the product has only recently launched, and the full impact is still unfolding. Continued user feedback will play a crucial role in refining and enhancing the IX applications to maximize their potential and adoption.
